Natural Hair | Should You Rock Curly/Kinky or Straight Extensions?

Hello Beauties!

Now that I am back to reality and rocking my natural hair again, I wanted to address a popular question that many women face when deciding on extensions.

Should I wear curly or straight extensions?

The answer to this question is simply going to depend on the individual, but after wearing both types of extensions, I wanted to share some advantages and disadvantages of both hair types for women with natural hair.  At the end of the post, let me know what you prefer!

Curly/Kinky Hair Extensions

Up until two months ago, this was the only type of hair extensions I had true experience with.  I wore them here and here and oftentimes had people believing it was my hair.

Advantages

  • Easily blends with natural hair
  • Limited heat needed
  • Can be found in inexpensive variations
  • Can be very natural in appearance

Disadvantages

  • May be hard to manipulate into other styles, such as straightening

Straight Hair Extensions

I recently wore straight hair extensions throughout two months and I was able to gain a new experience.

Advantages

  • Ability to create a variety of styles
    • i.e. straightening or curling hair as well as high ponytails and buns
  • Can be very natural in appearance

Disadvantages

  • Requires direct heat on hair (if hair is left out)
  • May require more expensive extensions for the most natural appearance

What do I prefer?

Both!  Admittedly, I am always going to be more partial to curly/kinky extensions because with them, I don't have to put heat on my own natural hair.  However, I loved being able to whip my hair for the past two months and I can't wait to reuse my last extensions.

What do you prefer?  Curly/Kinky or Straight Extensions?

God bless & stay fabellis,

  1. I'm a newbie to being natural...one year. I've worn nothing but protective styles such as braids and weaves. I think you should wear what you like. Sometimes, I'm into a curly kind of hair style and another time I want straight. It's all up to you! Thanks for sharing!

  2. i have to agree, wearing both types of extensions are my go to's since i'm not too fond of having to keep up with my own hair everyday because it requires alot more maintenance.

  8. I'm slightly partial to Curly extensions mainly because it blends well. I guess I just haven't ventured into straight extension that much. You rocked them both!

  9. I've worn both as well and I'm partial to the curly extensions. It's just like maintaining my own naturally curly hair & of course as you mention there is the benefit of not having to use heat on my own hair to blend.

  11. Wow your hair looks amazing in all of these and I definitely need to take some tips. I've never hand as thin hair as I do now and it really depresses me cause I treat it well. I think it's the poor quality of water here where I live :S
